Floating Hotels

For some explorers, the road less travelled will always hold the most appeal. Whether that involves a trip to a unique destination, an adventurous choice of cuisine or trying an activity that’s a little out of the ordinary, those that are attracted to novel experiences will always find something to pique their interest, no matter which part of the world is calling.

Why not extend this spirit of adventure to the place you choose to lay your head too?

If the standard hotel or B&B seems a little tired to you, hop aboard one of these unusual floating hotels. You may never want to set foot on dry land again…

Off, Paris

Moored at the foot of the Austerlitz Station in the City of Light, this floating hotel and bar has become one of the trendiest Parisian places to stay since it opened in 2016.

Boasting a choice of rooms with a variety of different river and city views, stylish sophistication is the name of the game throughout this hotel.

Take a dip in the on-deck plunge pool during the sunny, summer months or stroll the short distance to the beautiful Notre-Dame cathedral and the vibrant centre of the city to make the most of the excellent location.

Taj Lake Palace, Rajasthan

This opulent, floating hotel shot to fame in the 1983 James Bond film ‘Octopussy’, thanks to its pearly white, picturesque appearance - an image destined for the silver screen.

Thought to have been built in 1746 by Prince Maharana Jagat Singh II as a pleasure palace, Taj Lake Palace was restored to its former glory in the 1970s and offers a luxury Indian experience worthy of a maharaja.

Think plush furnishings, marble terraces and attendants, carrying embroidered parasols, that greet guests with champagne on arrival. Here, you can expect your every whim to be catered for; the hotel even arranges sightseeing city tours in a range of sleek vintage cars. Well, 007 would expect no less…

River Kwai Jungle Rafts, Kanchanaburi

The mighty River Kwai wends its sleepy way through Kanchanaburi, a provincial town not too far away from the bustle of Bangkok and an equally short distance from the natural splendour of Erawan National Park.

Enjoy this prime Thai location with a stay at River Kwai Jungle Rafts, a floating hotel that offers buckets of rustic charm, from the top of its thatched roof to its bamboo decking. Whether you want to soak up the jungle scenery from the comfort of a hammock or make the most of the river with a spot of rafting or canoeing, River Kwai Jungle Rafts can certainly make your holiday dreams come true.

Amstel Botel, Amsterdam

If the city of canals did not offer a decent floating hotel amongst its wide variety of places to stay, visitors to Amsterdam would surely feel a little short-changed?

Fortunately, Amstel Botel offers just the ticket for the flashpacker that fancies a night or two on the water. Perched on the historic NDSM Wharf, an area which has blossomed into a hip and happening spot for events and festivals throughout the year, there’s plenty to keep city slickers entertained.

The hotel also rents bikes to guests so you can still enjoy that oh-so Amsterdam method of seeing the city, before heading back to the floating bar for sunset.

The Queen Mary, Los Angeles

Step back in time with a stay on this transatlantic vintage vessel, located right in the heart of La La Land’s Long Beach harbour.

Once a world-class ocean liner, now a unique floating hotel experience that offers guests an insight into sea travel in the 30s, 40s and 50s, the Queen Mary is a more of a walking, talking museum than simply a place to sleep.

Choose from 346 first-class staterooms and suites, indulge in eclectic onboard shopping or treat yourself to a lavish pampering experience in the ship’s spa - there’s plenty to do both on and off this floating hotel in the city of stars.
